DEAR READER | ||
A Focus on Research «To do good and talk about it» is also important for research work. Because the allocation of funding implies a commitment on the part of the beneficiary to report on progress during an ongoing project and to publish the results after its completion. This is a very sensible strategy: First of all, potential users will have an opportunity to hear about the projects and, secondly, publications serve to promote networking among research institutes. PFI Biotechnology regularly receives invitations to inform national and international specialist forums about its research work, as was very recently the case at Kortrijk in Belgium and at Regensburg in Germany. The «SaliChem» project has just reached the half-way mark. «BioEOL» has just been concluded. And a new project has just been approved: This Newsletter reveals what the acronym «BYPROVAL» stands for and what the carrot in the logo signifies. Wishing you a pleasant read Dr. Stefan Dröge |

Pirmasens-Winzeln Energy Park Presentation Delivered at Belgian Biogas Meeting In the course of a training course held by the Belgian biogas platform Biogas-E, Dr. Michael Müller (PFI) delivered a talk about Pirmasens-Winzeln Energy Park. The event was attended by biogas plant operators, plant construction companies, and research and development specialists.

Power2Gas at Specialist Forum on «Biological Methanation» The East-Bavarian Technology Transfer Institute (Ostbayerisches Technologie-Transfer-Institut, OTTI) held its first specialist forum on the topic of biological methanation at Regensburg on 11 November 2015. Leading experts – among others Dr. Stefan Dröge of PFI – presented the latest laboratory and application-oriented developments in the field of biological methanation at this top-calibre event.

New Recycling Strategies for Biobased Plastics Goal of the recently concluded CORNET Project «Bio-EOL» was to identify recycling pathways for various biobased plastics that would ensure maximum valorisation. Successful outcome of the project was achieved in close collaboration between PFI Biotechnology and the Belgian Centexbel research institute. The principal results are outlined in this article.

«SaliChem» Project at Half Time As a participant in the CORNET Project «SaliChem», PFI Biotechnology is pursuing the goal of total material and energetic valorization of salt-tolerant plants known as halophytes. The work is being conducted in close collaboration with the Belgian research institute Celabor. This article marks the «half-time» point of the project by reporting preliminary results of thermal/chemical digestion of Spartina maritima by thermal pressure hydrolysis, a process developed by PFI.

Material and Energetic Valorization of Residual Biomass PFI Biotechnology and Celabor are continuing their successful cooperation. The new joint project bears the title «New Valorization Pathway for Fruit/Vegetable Waste by a Combination of Extraction and Biogas» or «BYPROVAL» (BYPROduct VALorization) for short. The focus is on non-marketable waste from products such as carrots, potatoes, sugar beet, apples, press cakes from vegetable oil production, cucumber stems and leaves, and many others. The objective is to develop new added-value chains for existing biogas plants through combination of extraction and biogas production. |
