Ukrainian Delegation at PFI A 30-person delegation from Ukraine visited PFI on 8 July. Pirmasens was one of the stops on the itinerary of a fact-finding trip organised by the German Federal Enterprise for International Cooperation (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH, GIZ) on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety within the framework of a project entitled «Establishment of Energy Agencies in Ukraine».

Conference on «Progress in Biogas III» PFI Biotechnology has been operating its own highly innovative biogas plant to produce green electricity since the start of 2014. PFI staff member Dr. Michael Müller will describe the design of the plant and the operating experience gained so far at the international «Progress in Biogas III» conference to be held in Stuttgart on 10 September. Imminent Breakthrough for Power-to-Gas Technology Success of the German energy turnaround will be critically dependent upon the development of intelligent practical solutions for energy conversion and storage. The most promising approach to long-term storage of excess power generated by wind turbines and solar installations is provided by power-to-gas technology, in which electricity is converted into the gaseous fuel methane. With financial support from the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate, PFI and Mainz University have jointly developed a novel biological power-to-gas process and successfully tested it on an engineering lab scale.

On-site Enzyme Production to Obtain Bio-based Chemicals and Polymers from Straw The production of bio-based chemicals and polymers from renewable raw materials is destined to be a major future issue. That is why PFI has long been active of the area of white biotechnology and has undertaken various research projects for the development of digestion processes and fermentation technologies which utilise agricultural waste materials for the production of bio-based products. However, the high cost of cellulose-cleaving enzymes constitutes a major obstacle to the industrial-scale production and application of these raw materials. In order to significantly reduce these costs, PFI plans to participate in a collaborative project with goal of setting up on-site enzyme production. |
